Gabriel has been a fixture on the Vancouver scene for many years, as a bandleader for weddings, conventions, and hotels. He is a unicorn of sorts, playing trumpet, flute, flugelhorn, and he also sings! He was featured at the Beijing Olympics, and has performed at festivals around the world, even performing at the home of Bill Gates. Gabriel was one of the original members of the multiplatinum Powder Blues Band, and after his departure from that ensemble, earned 11 Billboard hits, the Album of the Year and Instrumentalist of the Year Awards, a few Juno Awards, and his current album MidCentury Modern Vol. 4 is a bona fide hit on the JazzWeek.com charts, 10 weeks and running at this writing! This is what the critics say: “What ties the different sides of Hasselbach's work together is his refusal to treat straight-ahead and contemporary jazz as opposing worlds. For him, they are simply different expressions of the same musical foundation.”
